Friday, February 20, 2026

Opera Atelier is proud to announce its 2026/27 Season:

A Season of Heroes

Founding Co-Artistic Directors Marshall Pynkoski, C.M., and Jeannette Lajeunesse Zingg, C.M., unveil a season that explores transformation, sacrifice, and triumph through two monumental works of the Baroque repertoire.

October 22–25, 2026

The Descent of Orpheus

By Marc-Antoine Charpentier

Koerner Hall

The season opens with the first fully staged Canadian production of Charpentier’s haunting retelling of the Orpheus myth. Beginning not with hope but with loss, the opera charts Orpheus’s descent into the underworld in a deeply human journey toward transcendence.

Renowned for its elegance and extraordinary dance writing, the work exemplifies the richness of 17th-century French lyric theatre.

American tenor Daniel McGrew makes his Opera Atelier debut in the title role, joined by soprano Mireille Asselin as Eurydice, bass-baritone David Witczak as Pluto, and mezzo-soprano Mireille Lebel as Persephone. The Artists of Atelier Ballet perform choreography by Lajeunesse Zingg, with Opera Atelier Assistant Music Director Dr. Christopher Bagan making his Koerner Hall conducting debut leading Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra and Chamber Choir.

With evocative design by Gerard Gauci, the production will transform the hall itself, immersing audiences in Orpheus’s mythic world.

Single tickets on sale August 25, 2026.

The Resurrection

By George Frideric Handel

Koerner Hall

The season concludes with the return of Opera Atelier’s celebrated staging of Handel’s dramatic meditation on renewal and redemption.

Composed in 1708, the work unfolds between Good Friday and Easter Sunday, juxtaposing celestial conflict with earthly grief. An Archangel confronts Lucifer in a battle of rhetoric and will, while Mary Magdalene, Cleophas and St. John wrestle with sorrow and uncertainty. Handel’s richly expressive score moves seamlessly between grandeur, intimacy, and theatrical brilliance.

Stage directed by Pynkoski, the production features choreography by Lajeunesse Zingg and a striking multi-level set by Gauci. David Fallis conducts Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra. The cast includes Carla Huhtanen as the Archangel, Meghan Lindsay as Mary Magdalene, Mireille Lebel as Mary Cleophas, Antonin Rondepierre as St. John the Evangelist and David Witczak as Lucifer.

Single tickets on sale February 23, 2027.
