Toronto: “Mark of a Woman” makes its Canadian premiere May 22-23
Tuesday, April 21, 2026
As part of their 2026 #BeyondTO Series, Theatre Passe Muraille is thrilled to present Mark of A Woman, a powerful performance by acclaimed international artist Chisato Minamimura, onstage May 22 & 23, 2026. This production makes its Canadian premiere at TPM after having toured at several prestigious theatre companies and festivals in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Japan.
Mark of A Woman explores tattooing culture to confront the expectations and constraints society places on women's bodies, defining womanhood across cultures and generations. Drawing on her own lived experiences, Minamimura asks urgent and resonant questions: Can we ever escape the marks others place upon us? And what happens when we reclaim the power to mark ourselves?
“Tattoos may be regarded as an impulsive or trivial acquisition, but Mark of a Woman serves to show their cultural significance and role in promoting positive body image whilst also allowing the non-tattooed Chisato Minamimura to make a lasting impression” - British Theatre Guide
Through a fusion of Visual Vernacular, ASL, digital animation, kinetic projection, and Woojer™ technology, Mark of A Woman reframes tattooing as both a deeply personal and profoundly political act. The performance invites audiences to reexamine how gender is written onto our bodies from birth and what it means to reclaim that power for ourselves.
“In our final show of the 25-26 season, we’re thrilled to be able to bring the astonishing and powerful work of Chisato back to the theatre. TPM audiences may remember her from her play SCORED IN SILENCE, which we previously presented as a part of #BeyondTO. The beauty of Chisato’s work is the artistry, elegance, and precision of her unique perspectives. Her new show, Mark of a Woman, invites us to reconsider our relationship to the body, illuminating the visible and invisible ways we choose to mark—or leave unmarked—ourselves. As ever, TPM holds a spotlight for many unexplored narratives, and by including extraordinary international artists in our programming, the spotlights shine that much wider and brighter," says Marjorie Chan, Artistic Director and Indrit Kasapi, Artistic Producer.
