Toronto: The Guild Festival Theatre presents “Brontë: The World Without” July 16–August 2
Wednesday, June 10, 2026
Brontë: The World Without is a glimpse into the lives of the three famous sisters, presenting an intimate look at their relationships, their artistic struggles, the pressure of family responsibilities, and the sisterhood that helped them achieve greatness.
Presented outdoors at the iconic Greek Theatre in Guild Park & Gardens as part of our 15th season in the park, this play illuminates how the Brontë’s experiences echo those of the heroines who live on in their beloved and unforgettable novels such as Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights.
A must-see for Brontë fans, Brontë: The World Without is an unflinching portrayal of family, artistry, and what it means to strive for success in a world that often denies women the right to dream.
The lives of the Brontë sisters have been so mythologized that it's hard to separate truth from fiction. One of the elements that drew me to Jordi Mand's script is how it reveals the real women behind the stories. We experience their deep tragedies as well as their intense joys; we watch them bicker over the grocery list while they also create works of literary genius. On a personal note, as one of three sisters, I recognize the truth of the sibling rivalry, the intense love between them and the difficulty of balancing the responsibilities of family life while dreaming of something greater. - Helen Juvonen, Director
The Play:
Told over five days in the span of three years, the fascinating story of the Brontë sisters’ pioneering literary careers explores what it meant to be an ambitious woman in the 1800s, and how similar it looks to the struggles women still face today.
Brontë: The World Without will star Laura Del Papa (Company of Fools; Magnus Theatre) as Charlotte Brontë, Hilary Scott (Highland Arts Theatre) as Emily Brontë, and Lara Lucia (Shifting Ground Collective; Theatre of the Beat) as Anne Brontë. All three performers make their GFT debuts in this production, bringing to life the famous Brontë sisters in Jordi Mand's touching play.
