A beloved war memoir comes to life in the town where it was written.

Based on Farley Mowat’s acclaimed war memoir, And No Birds Sang tells his autobiographical account of military service during World War II, as a member of the Hastings Prince Edward (or, affectionately, Hasty P’s) Regiment. In this touching world premiere, Mowat transforms from a young man into a combat veteran, alongside the devastating losses that come with wartime.

Developed in our 2024 Creators’ Unit, this brand new production features live music and Foley sound, breathtaking performances, and a touching reflection on the sacrifices made by so many in our community.

ABOUT FARLEY MOWAT:

Farley Mowat, OC, author, environmentalist, activist (born 12 May 1921 in Belleville, Ontario; died 6 May 2014 in Port Hope, ON).

During World War II, Mowat joined the Canadian Army and was commissioned as a supernumerary second lieutenant into the Second Battalion, The Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment on 19 July 1940. Mowat was discharged at the end of World War II with the rank of captain. He was entitled to several medals as a result of his service.

After serving in World War II, Mowat attended the University of Toronto. Mowat's first book, People of the Deer (1952), was inspired by a field trip to the Canadian Arctic he made while studying at the University of Toronto. Mowat was outraged at the conditions endured by the Inuit living in Northern Canada. The book turned Mowat into a controversial, popular figure.

Farley Mowat is one of Canada's most widely read authors. His books have been translated into 52 languages and have sold more than 17 million copies around the world.
