written and directed by Peter Katz
Shape-of-a-Boy Productions, Toronto Fringe Festival, Cameron House, Toronto
July 2-11, 2003
The structure Peter Katz's first play, a series of audio diary entries, is not new and neither is the subject, the boring life of a female undergraduate devastated by her parents' divorce. But Katz has an ear for language that keeps clichés at bay and shows surprising insight into his sole character, the sad, funny Summer. She downs Jack Daniels because she's insecure and friendless. Unaccountably, Katz gives her a would-be fiancé who is waiting for her for, thus undermining the story's premise. As Summer, Melissa-Lynn Dozois gives a quirkily charming performance that draws us in and makes us care.
