Do These Pants Make Me Look Fat?, Toronto Fringe Festival, George Ignatieff Theatre, Toronto
July 3-13, 2013
Three versions of the same unnamed gay male - aged 15 and innocent (Keith McCallum), 25 and workaholic (Nadene Schuster) and 35 and promiscuous (Neil Cameron) - find themselves seated around a table arguing about which self is happier.
It's an intriguing idea, but the play leaves too many key points unexplained, such as who gathered the three from different decades and why, and what's the secret the 35-year-old seems to be hiding. It a fascinating idea to have one of the three selves played by a woman, but the play offers no particular clue as to why.
There are plenty of witty one-liners, and Schuster's effusive praise of marketing and cleaning products is amusing. But the play waits far too long to clarify who exactly the three are, and the debates among them become repetitive and lead nowhere.
