SYNOPSIS
The play is set in North London (England) in 1977. A middle-aged, middle- class couple (Amy and Tom Bates) are torn apart and struggling to come to terms with life after a hit-and-run accident which has left their only daughter (Patti) bed-ridden and unable to communicate and in need of round-the-clock care.
While Tom sinks deeper into reclusive, embittered despair, Amy (who holds a deep religious faith) prays for a miracle.
One day, and seemingly out of nowhere, a mysterious stranger appears on their doorstep and claims that he was once romantically linked to their daughter.
The silver-tongued charmer persuades the Bates’ to let him stay and help look after Patti. They (eventually) agree but this decision will result in a horrific turn of events.
THE AUTHOR
DENNIS POTTER is known internationally for his (TV) work including THE SINGING DETECTIVE, PENNIES FROM HEAVEN and LIPSTICK ON YOUR COLLAR.
He is said to have revolutionised the face of British TV in the 70’s and 80’s.
BRIMSTONE and TREACLE was originally commissioned by the BBC for their Play for Today series in 1974. However, on completion, it was considered far too shocking for TV and was subsequently banned by (the then) director of television programs, Alasdair Milne who, while stressing its sheer brilliance, described it as nauseating.
DENNIS POTTER described BRIMSTONE and TREACLE as being his best play.
