Toronto - The Story is a new telling of the Nativity. Part Beckett, part Monty Python with a bit of morality play thrown in. While embracing the biblical narrative, Martha’s artistry shines in the modern meaning she offers this ancient tale; she has created characters who don’t know they are the subject of 2000 years of worship. The audience follows the action through the Brickworks and adjacent parkland, where they meet shepherds, ruffians, weird wise men, roman soldiers, the angel Gabriel, King Herod, a choir, a drum corps, a confused young couple and a variety of surprised dog walkers.
The Story premiered at the Caravan in 2008 under the direction of Theatre Columbus’ Artistic Director Jennifer Brewin. This winter, Theatre Columbus brings a re-imagined version of The Story to Toronto. Brewin has assembled a team of great theatre artists who all share a talent for physical theatre and a love of outdoor performances.
Outdoor winter spectacle is a long-standing tradition in northern countries, from the fairs on the frozen Thames to winter carnivals—now even the NHL has moved outdoors. We defeat winter by embracing it. But winter theatre is not just about performing outdoors - it is about blending the movement of the crowd with the beauty of a winter night. The experience is reminiscent of childhood and the first snowfall. The action along with a good pair of winter boots keeps the cold temperatures at bay.
As the former Co Artistic Director of the Caravan, Brewin created and directed 12 winter productions that regularly performed to sold out houses in sub zero temperatures. In 2006 she was invited by Peter Hinton Centre to direct a winter play in his inaugural season at The National Arts Centre.
Actors Sanjay Talway, Haley McGee, Richard Lee and Rylan Wilke all bring their unique charms and athletic performance styles to this production. Designers Catherine Hahn and Glenn Davidson will transform the Brickworks Kiln room and parkland to ancient Palestine, while John Millard directs a rotating corps of local choirs and drummers.
