Theatre Passe Muraille (TPM) is thrilled to present Ride The Cyclone, in collaboration with Acting Up Stage Company. Ride The Cyclone is an unparalleled musical thrill-ride created by Atomic Vaudville – an award-winning performance company from Victoria, B.C. comprised of some of the country’s most unique and enthralling theatre creators. Ride the Cyclone is their long-awaited musical sequel to Legoland that appeared in TPM’s 2008-09 season.
Ride the Cyclone showcases a teenage chamber choir from Uranium City, Saskatchewan that dies in a roller coaster accident at a traveling fair. In a twist of fate, the choristers are given an opportunity to express themselves after their tragic death. Ride the Cyclone is their final recital, a chance to celebrate their individuality while coming to terms with their untimely demise. This comic assault on your senses is more than a musical; it’s a unique theatrical insight into the angst of a new generation.
Ride the Cyclone first dazzled Toronto audiences as a part of the 2010 Summerworks Festival. Since then, it has gone on to tour the Belfry Theatre (Victoria) and The Vancouver Arts Club; it will stop in Whitehorse for a run at The Yukon Arts Centre before arriving in Toronto. Ride the Cyclone has played to sold out houses and garnered critical acclaim, with critics across the country predicting a New York run. “Not since The Drowsy Chaperone will Broadway have seen anything so clever from north of the border” (Vancouver Sun). “This show could go all the way” (CBC). “Probably the most uproarious and outrageous piece of musical theatre Canada has ever produced” (Globe and Mail). With some performances at Theatre Passe Muraille already sold out, it appears the trend will continue in Toronto.
Ride the Cyclone is written by Jacob Richmond and Brooke Maxwell and directed by Jacob Richmond and Britt Small. The company is made up of many core Atomic Vaudeville members, including set designer Hank Pine and James Insell, costume designer Ingrid Hansen, video designer Chris Loran, lighting designer Michael Franzmann and Britt Small and assistant designer Taylor Tuson and Kristin Stoutley. Ride The Cyclone is performed by Rielle Braid, Matthew Coulson, Kelly Hudson, Elliot Loran, Sarah Jane Pelzer and Kholby Wardell.
