Toronto, October 25th - This fall, the Toronto Irish Players (T.I.P) present Shining City, a humorous and haunting drama by Irish playwright Conor McPherson, at the Alumnae Theatre, 70 Berkeley St, on November 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th (matinee), 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th (matinee), 17th, 18th and 19th.
Set entirely in a psychiatrist’s office in Dublin, the play features a therapist counselling a widower haunted by the ghost of his dead wife, while he also struggles with his own psychological secrets. Charting the parallel trajectories of the two men in their struggle to understand what is happening to them, Shining City is a poignant meditation on regret, guilt and personal perplexity.
Described by the London Telegraph as "the finest dramatist of his generation” Conor McPherson debuted Shining City in London’s West End in 2004. It subsequently opened on Broadway in 2006 and was nominated for two Tony Awards, including Best Play. The New York Times critic Ben Brantley described it as, “Quiet, haunting and absolutely glorious. Shining City is as close to perfection as contemporary playwriting gets.”
The 2011 T.I.P production of Shining City is directed by award-winning actor and director Cliona Kenny, produced by third generation T.I.P member Sharon Taylor, and features an esteemed cast of up-and-coming and accomplished actors including Matt Jensen, Katharine O’Brien, Diarmuid Collins, and best actor award-winner Stephen Flett.
T.I.P has produced more than 60 plays over the last 35 years, garnering more than 70 awards for outstanding production, performances, technical achievement, costumes and set design. Since their first production of a Yeats play in June 1975, T.I.P has gone on to embrace the classics of Irish theatre along with taking risks with edgy new works coming out of Ireland. Shining City is a glowing example and a must-see for theatergoers.
The Toronto Irish Players (T.I.P) was founded by a group of new Irish immigrants in 1975 and is Toronto’s only Irish community theatre group.
