Toronto, ON – Matthew Jocelyn, Artistic & General Director, today announced that David Abel, Managing Director, will be leaving Canadian Stage after more than 15 years with the company. Mr. Abel will continue to work with the company through the 2011.2012 season to support the senior management team in his capacity as manager, producer and advisor.
“David’s contributions to Canadian Stage over the past 15 years have been innumerable and invaluable. It is with deep regret that we accept his resignation,” said Jocelyn. “David has been an integral part of the leadership of Canadian Stage, working tirelessly to enable the transition to a new artistic mandate. He has been an exceptionally generous and committed collaborator and, on a very personal note, a friend who helped to ease my way into this company. My heartfelt thanks to David for all the years he has given to Canadian Stage. While we will miss David, we wish him every success as he moves forward in his career.”
Mr. Abel will join the Art of Time Ensemble as Executive Director on January 1, 2012, where he will work closely with Artistic Director Andrew Burashko to present classical music with contemporary relevance. This transition is fitting as the Art of Time Ensemble’s latest production, I Send You This Cadmium Red, will be presented by Canadian Stage as part of its 2011.2012 season.
“It is with both elation and heartbreak that I announce my departure from Canadian Stage,” said Mr. Abel. “While it is hard to leave an institution that means as much to me as Canadian Stage, I am excited to embark on a voyage in the world of music with the rapidly rising Art of Time Ensemble. In my time at Canadian Stage, I have made countless lasting friendships and seen the company stage many extraordinary pieces of work, bookended by the legendary production of Tony Kushner’s Angels in America in 1996, through the much anticipated production of John Logan’s Red in November 2011. I’d like to thank my colleagues on staff and on the Board, both current and former, all of whom have been a joy to work with. It has been an honour to work alongside Matthew Jocelyn as he boldly leads the Canadian Stage to even greater heights. I look forward to cheering you all on.”
Mr. Abel joined Canadian Stage in 1996 as the Associate Producer and Director of Production. He has since held various management positions and was appointed General Manager in 2007. Matthew Jocelyn appointed Mr. Abel as Managing Director in July, 2009.
Art of Time Ensemble’s I Send You This Cadmium Red will be on stage at the Berkeley Street Theatre (26 Berkeley St.) from October 10 to 22, 2011. This unique performance in two parts features live music by renowned British composer Gavin Bryars and choreography from James Kudelka. Daniel Brooks directs.
