THE VILLAGE PLAYERS, BLOOR WEST VILLAGE
DOUBT, A PARABLE
By John Patrick Shanley
Directed by Maureen Lukie
Performance Dates: March 9, 2012 – March 31, 2012
Cast:
Sister Aloysius Beauvier (50’s/60’s): A powerful woman with much insight into people’s failings, but less compassion and humour. A woman who lacks doubt and does not value it.
Father Flynn (late 30’s): An articulate, even charismatic priest, who has a more modern outlook than Sister Aloysius, but who also enjoys the power of the priesthood and his position. Confident to the point of arrogance.
Sister James (20’s): A young woman still finding her role, given to an optimistic view of people, but also prone to fears and doubt.
Mrs. Muller (black, around 38): A woman of insight and awareness, prepared to fight for her son in a world of injustice.
The play is set in New York in 1964. It is necessary in the context of the play that Sister Aloysius and Father Flynn be Caucasian and that Mrs. Muller be black. Sister James cannot be black, but there may be some flexibility in her casting otherwise. The ages are as given in the script. There may also be some flexibility with regard to age, but final casting will have to make sense in terms of generational differences. Actors should be prepared to read from the script which is on reserve at the Performing Arts Desk, 5th floor, Toronto Reference Library, 789 Yonge Street. Those actors with whom the director is not familiar should prepare a short dramatic monologue. Please bring a résumé and headshot – a photocopy will do.
