Death (A Play!) by Woody Allen is inspired by the play The Killer, by Eugene Ionesco. The play borrows the absurdist theatre penchant for ridiculous responses to ridiculous circumstances, as it tells the story of a salesman, a kind of everyman, named Kleinman.
Kleinman is woken up in the middle of the night by an angry mob, who rouse him to action and demand he join in on their plan to catch a killer. Dragged out onto the dark streets on the promise of an airtight plan, he finds himself alone, oblivious, and under constant threat of an anonymous killer on the loose. He encounters a series of madcap characters, each more bent on driving Kleinman to distraction and neurotic outpourings, as they reveal that they know truly nothing of his purpose. The action of each scene grows more furiously hysterical, as the mob factions into rivaling groups, more people die, and Kleinman still has no clue as to what he might do to help. Ultimately, he meets the madman, face to face, and in a hopeless attempt to overcome the inevitable, he demands to understand the killer’s logic and purpose. Unfortunately, the killer has his own plan....
art & lies productions is a newly formed company of four diverse theatre professionals. They have joined forced, driven by their passion for the theatre of the Absurd, stylized and devised performance, and beautifully scripted, darkly comical texts. Death (A Play!) is an ideal first venture for these seasoned individuals, and they have brought a cast of wonderfully talented physical actors to capture the decadently neurotic flavour of Woody Allen’s examination of logic versus impulse, mob mentality, and death itself.
art & lies productions opted to present this piece in a highly physically stylized performance, in order to heighten the examination of our own idiosyncrasies and hysterias in the face of a real or imagined danger.
