Mammalian Diving Reflex is accepting applications for the Ontario Arts Council’s Theatre Creatorsʼ Reserve Program
Deadline: Thursday, December 1st 2011
Applications will be considered in the context of how your project intersects with our interests and approach to art making.
What we are prioritizing:
We are interested in work that addresses our mandate and is in line with our artistic mission. Mammalian is currently focused on formal innovation and work that engages the viewer, inviting participation.
A commitment that forms a basic inquiry for the company is a dedication to racial and age diversity, with many of our projects occurring in collaboration with children and particularly children and youth who are immigrants to their current country. We would love to see some applications also reflect this interest, but this criterion is very flexible.
This work does not need to have a public presentation component; it can be considered research or an activity simply for the interest and benefit of the participating parties. Weʼre looking for exciting mash-ups of different individuals working together and doing interesting, unusual, thought provoking and, if possible, fun things.
What we are not prioritizing:
Currently we are not as interested in script-based work, no matter how engaged the content is with politics or the social sphere. Feel free to send us scripts but know that they will be given a lower priority.
More information about Mammalian Diving Reflex:
Mandate: Founded in 1993, Mammalian Diving Reflex creates new work in theatre and performance, organizes community events, and contributes to theoretical and practical advancements in performance. We create work that dismantles barriers between individuals, fostering a dialogue between audience members, between the audience and the material, and between the performers and the audience. It is our mission to bring people together, engage them, challenge them and get them talking, thinking and feeling.
Artistic Mission: Mammalian Diving Reflex is a research-art atelier dedicated to investigating the social sphere, always on the lookout for contradictions to whip into aesthetically scintillating experiences. Our body of work is interconnected, fluid and ongoing. We create theatre, performance and events that are not only varied and vibrant, but that also lead to new theoretical insights into the use and function of culture. We are more than an art company; we see ourselves as a culture production workshop that collaborates with the public to create site and social- specific performance events, theatre-based productions, gallery-based participatory installations, video products, theoretical texts and a unique body of knowledge and expertise. Our work occurs in public, collaborates with non-artists, and offers both participatory opportunities for the audience as well as the traditional option of simply watching the proceedings as they unfold. However, when our work exists on a stage and communicates to the audience in a fairly traditional relationship, we always involve the audience in unusual ways.
