TORONTO, ON (Dec. 28, 2011) – As Harbourfront Centre’s World Stage 2012 season quickly approaches, we are pleased to announce a last-minute addition to the already formidable line-up of provocative and cutting-edge performances. On Friday, May 18 and Saturday, May 19, 2012, the internationally-acclaimed immersive theatre experience, Dance Marathon, returns to the stage where it all began for an exclusive World Stage engagement.
Toronto’s Dora award-winning theatre collective bluemouth inc. is dedicated to reaching beyond the boundaries of conventional performance practice, and with the support of Harbourfront Centre’s Fresh Ground new works commissioning program, debuted Dance Marathon in the World Stage 08/09 season. From there, the production’s playful integration of movement, text, music, video and audience interaction captivated viewers and critics around the globe, touring to Vancouver, New York, Melbourne, Edinburgh and London. In the show, audience members of all levels of dance-floor comfort participate, learn and are judged in a series of challenges inspired by the endurance contests of 1920s and ‘30s America while a live band provides the soundtrack. Non-dancers can sit back and enjoy the show.
Dance Marathon is not only the high note upon which the 2012 season of World Stage will conclude, but a fitting finish to the series, which also starts with a Fresh Ground new works commission. The 2012 World Stage season kicks off, on Saturday, Feb. 18, with Everything Under the Moon, which sees visual artist Shary Boyle and songwriter and performer Christine Fellows unite their respective crafts to create a fantastical narrative for the whole family, told through hand-animated projected image and song.
