Theatre Passe Muraille (TPM) Artistic Director Andy McKim is an advocate for work that continues developing beyond the original production. In his time at TPM, he has banished the term “world premiere”. Productions should always be in a position to develop after having their first audience. TPM has focused on the development process and providing opportunities to showcase work at various stages of progress to a diverse range of audiences. To that end, TPM has some exciting news about a few of its most recent productions: Oh My Irma, Those Who Can’t Do..., and The Tale of a Town-Queen West.
Oh My Irma by Haley McGee was invited to be a part of the United Solo Theatre Festival this past November. TPM produced the play in our 2010-2011 season. The Festival is the world’s largest international festival devoted to solo performances and is held annually in New York City. It celebrates the uniqueness of the individual and stages “the most intriguing productions at the highly acclaimed Theatre ROW...on 42nd Street.” Oh My Irma won the award for Best Production.
Keeping with the trend of successful one-woman productions, this fall season’s production of Those Who Can’t Do... By Erin Fleck has been selected for Uno Fest: Canada’s Singular Live Theatre Event. Uno Fest is North America’s longest-running festival dedicated exclusively to one-person theatre. “With an emphasis on fun, accessible theatre, Uno Fest brings together great alternative comedy, drama, physical theatre, new media performance and spoken word from around Canada and the world.” The Festival is produced by Intrepid Theatre in Victoria, BC.
TPM’s 2011 fall season opener, The Tale of a Town-Queen West, co-produced with FIXT POINT in a production written and performed by Lisa Marie DiLiberto, will be given new life in January in the form of a radio production. CBC Radio has commissioned an hour-long documentary about the show that will highlight some of the stories gleaned from the community during the creation process and put a spotlight on the creation process itself. This documentary will air nationally on CBC Radio One on January 2, 2012 from 7:00am-8:00am EST.
This is an exciting time at TPM with work that continues to evolve as it passes through our walls. McKim says “ This is a huge success story for us to see our productions going on to find other audiences after their runs here at TPM. It is particularly pleasing to see three young female creators all being celebrated and presented elsewhere.”
