TORONTO, January 12, 2012 - Tarragon Theatre announces a WorkSpace presentation of THIS IS WAR, written by Hannah Moscovitch and directed by Tarragon Artistic Director Richard Rose. Public WorkSpace performances of THIS IS WAR take place on Jan 20, 21, 26 and 28 at 8pm in Tarragon's WorkSpace (Near Studio). All performances are free of charge, and no reservations are taken.
It is 2008. Canadian Forces are holding Panjwaii, the most volatile region of Afghanistan, with very little support from NATO-ISAF. Captain Stephen Hughes' top priority is the safety of his soldiers, but what begins as a minor indiscretion on his part spells danger for his team. Stationed in a forward operating base in the Panjwaii Valley, he's always looking for the next threat, knowing it can come any time from any direction. He just didn't expect it would come from him.
Award-winning playwright Hannah Moscovitch examines the horrors of war as soldiers talk to an unseen journalist.
"When we first got out there, we went on a foot patrol and one of the guys - he got shot in the crotch. Bled out just after the chopper showed up.
He died right away - well, not right away."
THIS IS WAR stars Ari Cohen as Sergeant Stephen Hughes, Sergio Di Zio as Sergeant Chris Anders, Ian Lake as Private Jonny Henderson and Sarah McVie as Master Corporal Tanya Young.
WorkSpace is both a place - an intimate performance venue located in the Near Studio - and a philosophy. In an effort to nurture new play development, Tarragon offers artists several weeks to workshop a play before presenting it, in its primary phases, to a small audience. WorkSpace not only helps to prepare plays for full production, but serves as an opportunity to reconnect with Tarragon's more experimental roots - to "play" - and to investigate innovative new works.
Notable plays that began as WorkSpace presentations as part of their development process include No Great Mischief by David Young, The Oxford Roof Climber's Rebellion by Stephen Massicotte, Another Home Invasion by Joan MacLeod, The Patient Hour by Kristen Thomson, UBUNTU (The Cape Town Project) by Theatrefront Collective and Name in Vain (Decalogue Two) by André Alexis.
