Toronto, ON (January 27, 2012) – In an effort to raise funds to support her upcoming journey to Australia and New Zealand where she will be performing her one-woman show at the Adelaide and Dunedin Fringe Festivals, Toronto’s critically acclaimed performer-playwright Lauren Stein will première Laurentina’s ODDyssey for Toronto audiences. The event will take place at Waterfalls Indian Tapas Bar & Grill, 303 Augusta Avenue, Kensington Market, from 7:00 to 10:00 pm on Thursday, February 16th. Tickets are $15 if purchased online through http://www.indiegogo.com/Laurentinas-Oddyssey; $20 at the door. A $50 Waterfalls gift certificate, AGO tickets, and improv classes will be among the raffle prizes on offer. The evening will include entertainment by musical acts and audience members are entitled to a 10% food discount. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the humanitarian clown missions under Patch Adams’ Gesundheit Global Outreach.
On Laurentina’s 30th birthday, she realises she has nothing to show for her life. She is single, unemployed, and living in her parents’ house. So she does what any sane person in her situation would do: she dabbles in Witchcraft. This one-of-a-kind performance pushes the boundaries of comedy, adventure, and coming-of-age, using a unique combination of story-telling elements, improvisation, and audience interaction. Every show is different as the audience helps to determine the result of the character’s actions.
In addition to her performances, Lauren has been invited to present improv and storytelling workshops in Adelaide and Dunedin.
Lauren Stein is a fiercely funny woman, dedicated to her mission of enhancing lives through comedy and joy. Her most recent one-woman show, Laurentina's Funhouse, the tale of a circus performer who always wanted to run away and become an accountant, premiered July 2011 at the Toronto Fringe Festival. Previous one-woman shows include Kalgaar, the cult recruitment speech that has toured to Israel and Hawaii; and SuperTour!, a performance installation for Toronto Nuit Blanche 2011. She teaches weekly classes at Laurentina's Improv Club.
Lauren has spent a month on a circus farm, co-produced two web series, and produced a theatre festival. She has completed the Summer Improv Intensive at Impatient Theatre Company; the Improvisation Program at Second City; and trained at the Artistic New Directions improv intensive programs in the Catskills. She received her BA in Drama from the University of Guelph and is completing two LTCL certifications with Trinity Guildhall, a division of Oxford University, in Communication Skills and in Speech and Drama.
