[Mississauga ON, January 2012] Theatre Erindale’s record-setting “Power of Performance” Anniversary Season continues with one of the wackiest comedies ever written. Ann-Marie MacDonald’s Goodnight Desdemona (Good Morning Juliet) is already a Canadian classic, and has been produced around the world. It plays at the Erindale Studio Theatre from January 19th to 29th.
Billed as “the surreally absurd classic Canadian comedy”, the play is an outrageous and hilarous modern-day Alice-in-Wonderland story. Mousy academic Constance Ledbelly, driven to despair by her sleazy mentor at Queen’s University, literally falls down the rabbit-hole into a subconscious journey of self-discovery – where she finds herself in a world of sword-fighting, gender-swapping, and Shakespearean characters like you’ve never seen them before! It’s the winner of the Governor General's, Chalmers Canadian Play and Canadian Author's Association Awards, with well over 50 professional productions world-wide. “A feast: funny, fast-paced, and unforgettable!” wrote Greenmanreview.com in the USA. “Exuberant … a tour de force … a Canadian classic!” raved the Toronto Star.
Playwright Ann-Marie MacDonald is a brilliant actor-writer based in Toronto. Her novels Fall on Your Knees and As the Crow Flies have been recommended by Oprah Winfrey and won or been nominated for every award in the English-speaking world. Her plays and librettos have been mounted from Buddies in Bad Times Theatre to the Shaw Festival. And as an actor she has won a Gemini Award for Where the Spirit Lives and been nominated for many others. Director Daniel Levinson is a Stratford Festival Fight Director, head of Rapier Wit Studio, and the resident Fight Director for Theatre Erindale. He has worked on several productions of the play, but this is his first as captain of the ship. Levinson’s cast features just five adept young actors from the graduating class of the Sheridan-UTM Theatre and Drama Studies Program, racing round the stage in several roles each, with swordfights, musical numbers, and costume changes galore to add to the mayhem.
Theatre Erindale’s previous production, 1917: The Halifax Explosion, sold out all but two performances and set a new record for its annual world première adaptations, coming second in the company’s entire box office history. It was also voted one of the year’s Ten Best Shows by the Ontario Arts Review – side by side with productions from the Shaw and Stratford Festivals (the tenth Theatre Erindale production to win that honour).
Goodnight Desdemona (Good Morning Juliet) previews January 19, opens January 20, and runs January 21 and 26 to 29 in the intimate state-of-the-art Erindale Studio Theatre on the campus of the University of Toronto Mississauga. Tickets are still only $15.00 – just $10.00 for students and seniors – and early booking is recommended! Curtain time Thursday is 7:30, Friday and Saturday 8PM, with 2PM matinees Saturday and Sunday. On Thursdays use the CCT Garage accessed from the South end of campus, for other performances use Lot 1 at the North end. Parking is $6.00.
