The University College Drama Program is pleased to announce the Canadian premiere of OBIE award-winning playwright and author Chuck Mee's The Rules as its 2011-12 Resource Show. Premiered in 1996, The Rules will be presented here under the direction of Baņuta Rubess, who is returning after last year's successful production of Howard Barker's cutting-edge The Possibilities.
The Rules continues UC Drama's tradition of producing thought-provoking, experimental theatre, and offers more of a performance event than a play. The Rules leads us to question the idea of what it means to be 'civilized.' Mee does this through his evocative style of storytelling that is both fragmented and collagelike. Scenes and characters zigzag through space and time in locations as diverse as the decadent Happy Valley set in Kenya or the operating room of a surgeon. They ruminate on current social mores while licking a cigar or harvesting organs. We live by rules that predate our here and now. The Rules is about the people who set the rules, enforce the rules and flout them. As Mee explains "Rules of what is done and what isn't done, what is acceptable behavior and what is rude behavior-all become techniques of political control."
The University College Drama Program at the University of Toronto brings together intellectual curiosity and rigor, creative inspiration, and disciplined professional training.
Baņuta Rubess, is a seasoned experimental artist, who bridges both worlds, the North American and the European. She has deep ties to theatre companies such as Nightwood Theatre, Theatre Passe Muraille, and Tapestry NewOperaWorks.
