Inspired by Eugene O’Neill’s Desire Under the Elms and ‘the Canadian experience’, this reimagining of a canonical work moves far from the mid-19th century in middle America and into all times and places, exploring how all peoples are related. This show takes on racial hierarchy, legacies of inheritance, entitlement, and blood memory.
Already regarded as a piece of theatre that should not be missed by such renowned authors as Joseph Boyden. “free as injuns is groundbreaking theater. Its examination of the land and the mixed blood of the people who work on it and fight over it is, simply, extraordinary. This play is brave, and devastating, and funny, and ready to explode our simplified view of race and kinship.” Says Joyden, calling Native Earth “a national treasure.”
Designer Andy Moro (Red Pepper Spectacle Arts) has built a breathtaking landscape which is set in the round so that the audience will be able to immerse themselves in this brave and daring piece of theatre. Ruth Madoc-Jones is once again directing a Tara Beagan play, which is sure to draw the raw themes of the play and display them in a real and beautiful manner. A stellar cast is equally driven by Beagan’s bone deep text, and by the dynamic chemistry of actors James Cade and PJ Prudat, last paired in Falen Johnson’s Salt Baby, as well as a vocal cameo by former Native Earth artistic director, Yvette Nolan.
