World Stage 2012 – Through to May 19 – World Stage offers Toronto audiences access to a selection of productions at the forefront of contemporary arts. Eight hand-picked productions from the U.S., England, France, Brazil and Canada will take the stage augmenting decades of progressive world-class performance found only at World Stage. Innovative works from local, national and international performing arts companies showcasing provocative, energizing and electrifying performances in theatre, dance, music and multidisciplinary work. Performances take place at the Fleck Dance Theatre, located on the 3rd floor of the Queen’s Quay Terminal, 207 Queens Quay West and the Enwave Theatre, 231 Queens Quay West. May 2–5, 8 p.m. Agwa/Correria – Compagnie Käfig (France/Brazil) – Hip hop prodigy Mourad Merzouki brings France and Brazil together to create poetic urban dance with exuberant and explosive power. Agwa takes place between tight corridors of little cups of water. Athletic and acrobatic, Correria is a stylized endurance piece that lunges into a whirlwind of the frenzied modern world. This double bill is guaranteed to leave you thirsty for more. Suitable for children ages six and up. Performances at the Fleck Dance Theatre.
May 9–12, 8 p.m. THE SHIPMENT – Young Jean Lee’s Theater Company (U.S.) – Canadian premiere – Young Jean Lee, a rising star of the U.S. theatre, dissects what it means to be black in America in this hilarious and shocking play. Brazenly theatrical and transcendentally lyrical, THE SHIPMENT moves from the urban dreams of would-be rappers to the sitcom realism of Yuppie domesticity, proving that nothing is ever s it seems. With an ending guaranteed to leave jaws hanging, this is contemporary theatre at its biggest, boldest and most daring. Performances at the Enwave Theatre.
May 18–19, 7 p.m. Dance Marathon – Exclusive return engagement – Strap on your dancing shoes and spin around the floor in this immersive theatre event inspired by the endurance contests of 1920s and ‘30s America. Come alone or as a group; come if you’re experienced or a novice. Boogie down with a live band, learn a few new steps, let the floor judges guide you and take a few well- deserved breaks. If you’ve got two left feet, fear not. Simply sit back and enjoy the performance. Don’t miss this last chance to catch the phenomenon of Dance Marathon. Performances at the Enwave Theatre.
HATCH 2012 – York Quay Centre – Harbourfront Centre’s annual performing arts residency programme. A chance to encounter some of the most original, exciting and fresh voices this city has to offer. The audience plays a vital role in the creative process, assisting artists in bringing these new visions to life. Following each HATCH presentation, there’s a Q & A where the audience is invited to engage and interact with the artists. There is also a post-performance reception where the audience can discuss the work with the creative team and other audience members. HATCH has produced numerous projects which have gone on to be presented around the world and have garnered many awards and professional accolades, including Hannah Moscovitch’s The Russian Play and Aluna Theatre’s Nohayquiensepa. The guest curator this season is Toronto based performance artist Jess Dobkin. Tickets: $15 or $12 for Students/Seniors/Arts Workers and $40 HATCH pass for all four shows. May 5, 8 p.m.Pantheon – Kids on TV – Combining bouncy house music, old-school hip hop, Liberace piano drama, mutant hero roller-disco battles, love songs between closeted 20th-century artists and epic choral arrangements, Pantheon celebrates the historical and fictional figures of Kids on TV’s personal and collective mythologies.
