February 6, 2012... Karen Kain, Artistic Director of The National Ballet of Canada, today announced the 2012/13 season, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Christopher Wheeldon returns by popular demand along with Romeo and Juliet by Alexei Ratmansky, which will tour to London, England. The season also features the company premieres of Nijinsky by John Neumeier and a full-length production of Carmen by Davide Bombana and the Toronto premiere of The Man in Black by James Kudelka.
“The 2012/13 season is a special one for the National Ballet in two important ways. First is the repertoire itself, which is an exciting and diverse blend of works from the classical canon and new ballets by some of the most interesting and talented choreographers at work today,” says Ms. Kain. “The second reason is that the season will see the company touring to key Canadian and international dance centres. I have always felt touring was and should be a vital component of the National Ballet’s identity and it gives me great pleasure to know we will be representing Canada and Canadian dance artistry abroad for the first time in many years.”
The 2012/13 Season
A highlight of The National Ballet of Canada’s 2012/13 season will be the tour of the triumphant new production of Romeo and Juliet by Alexei Ratmansky to Sadler’s Wells in London, England, April 17 – 21, 2013. After an absence of over two decades, the National Ballet returns to perform on the London stage. The company last toured to The London Coliseum in 1987. Romeo and Juliet will also tour to the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, January 31 – February 2, 2013.
In Toronto, the Fall Season opens with the return of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Christopher Wheeldon, November 10 – 25, 2012. A co-production with England’s Royal Ballet, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland was a smash hit on both sides of the Atlantic when it premiered in 2011. The Tenth International Competition for The Erik Bruhn Prize takes place on November 28, 2012 and is followed by Giselle, one of the National Ballet’s most popular classical works, December 5 – 9, 2012.
Following The Nutcracker, December 19, 2012 – January 5, 2013, is the company premiere of John Neumeier’s celebrated work, Nijinsky, March 1 – 7, 2013. Part memory-ballet and part biographical narrative, Nijinsky is a complex and absorbing character study of one of ballet’s most legendary figures. Romeo and Juliet by Alexei Ratmansky returns March 12 – 17, 2013. Sold out when it premiered last season, this exciting new version by the acclaimed Russian choreographer is already an audience favourite and perfect for the March Break. Concluding the Winter Season is an all-Canadian mixed programme of The Four Seasons by James Kudelka and Emergence by Crystal Pite, March 20 – 24, 2013.
The Summer Season features a newly expanded, full-length version of Davide Bombana’s sultry and passionate Carmen, June 5 – 16, 2013 and a mixed program of Jorma Elo’s Pur ti Miro, No. 24 by Principal Dancer Guillaume Côté, James Kudelka’s The Man in Black and George Balanchine’s Theme and Variations, June 19 – 23, 2013. Created for the Choreographic Lab in 2010, No. 24 is Mr. Côté’s first ballet to be part of the National Ballet’s regular season. The Man in Black, which made its company premiere on the 2011 Western Canada tour, was the undeniable hit of the tour.
