"The first time I fell in love" is hardly an original topic for a solo show, but Sam S. Mullins’ disarming frankness makes it seem brand new. At 16, Sam falls in love with Amanda only to lose her, he thinks, to the self-satisfied David Oliver, whose Britishness makes Canadian girls swoon.
Mullins is skilled at presenting his moment-by-moment thoughts during acutely embarrassing scenes from the past that most people would have blotted from memory. His style of delivery is so completely devoid of artifice, it feels as if he's speaking off the cuff to gathered friends.
