Toronto: Sharilyn thinks comedy is pretty great. Beautiful, in fact.
But the mid-90s haze of Gen-X angst doesn't encourage such warm-and-fuzzy admissions, so she channels her love of laughter into something much more socially acceptable: an out-of-control infatuation with a young, hot comedian named Jon Stewart.
Directed by Laura Anne Harris (star of 2011 Toronto Fringe hit Pitch Blond), Fake News Fangirl is the completely true story of one woman’s adventures in the world of Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert fandom. A hotel room encounter with a Daily Show correspondent; writing horrible fan fiction about her heroes; and when fantasy clashes with reality, suddenly becoming closer to their creative process than she ever imagined (or wanted).
But when it all goes wrong, in the most heartbreaking and public way, what’s left?
Called “vulnerable and endearing” by the Victoria Times-Colonist, Fake News Fangirl resonates with anyone who loves something – anything – more than what’s considered “normal”.
Fake News Fangirl stars writer Sharilyn Johnson, under the direction of Laura Anne Harris (Pitch Blond, Psycho Bitch) and creative consultant Molly Prather (How I Met Your Mother, The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson).
