Toronto: Toronto audiences at this summer’s Fringe Festival will get their first look at two powerful dramas from the UK. Tim Crouch’s ENGLAND and Sarah Grochala’s S-27 are award winning dramas that confront the personal biases we use to place value on people.
Both productions entertain and provoke by combining the mediums of visual art and theatre in an attempt to challenge the audience to examine the issue of personal accountability and its repercussions on those around us.
ENGLAND draws on the subjective appreciation of art as the audience is led on a guided tour through art space 401 Richmond. S-27 focuses the story through the lens of a prison photographer observing subjects captured in infamous mug shots during Cambodia’s Khmer Rouge era.
S-27 and ENGLAND address the fact that we tend to place a greater value on the lives of the people we know compared to the equally deserving lives of strangers. The directors of both productions believe this tendency can be challenged through the shared experience of theatre.
Both award-winning plays have been performed internationally to critical acclaim. Toronto audiences will now have the opportunity to enjoy two poignant shows which had successful runs in the UK, Australia, Budapest and Hong Kong.
ENGLAND at 401 Richmond and S-27 at The Annex Theatre can be seen as part of the Toronto Fringe Festival beginning July 4.
