Toronto: The 2012 Toronto Fringe Festival is embracing its rowdy wonderful history with this year’s slogan: More Rootin Tootin’ Than High Falutin’. The Toronto Fringe Festival is this summer’s place to be, and tickets for this must-see event are on sale now! Only 50% of tickets are available in advance, so book early to avoid disappointment.
In addition to the impressive 155 shows, this summer sees a bigger and better Artist Alley showcasing mini-plays and visual art as well as afternoon Tent Talks featuring some of Toronto’s VIP theatre personalities, and the best food the neighbourhood has to offer. The food at the Fringe Tent is not to be missed: some familiar favourites such as Southern Accent, Caribbean Roti Palace and The Butler’s Pantry are back this year, as well as Fringe Foodie newcomers like The Stop and Sky Blue Sky Sandwiches.
The Toronto Fringe Festival has always been a place for everyone—from first time theatre-goers to tried and true Fringers—and this year is no different. The Festival has something to offer for young’uns as well as those who remain young at heart. For those of you who are and have always been old at heart, don’t worry, there are plenty of shows for you to enjoy as well. You may even win an award for being such a great audience; the Fringe Festival’s new partner ToSho Knife Arts is sponsoring the brand new Performance Innovation Award with an audience prize of a $200 hand-crafted artisan knife.
It’s easy to spend a whole day at the Fringe. For families (and really anyone looking to beat the heat in the morning), there’s no better solution than catching a FringeKids! show at the Palmerston library, every day of the Festival starting at 11:00am. Afterwards, you can take an afternoon stroll to the Fringe Tent to sip a cool beverage and get a show recommendation from a fellow Fringer. While at the Tent, the whole family will enjoy FREE programming, including a Jack Grunsky concert on Saturday, July 14th at 3pm. Then it’s an easy hop, skip and a jump to catch a show at one of the theatres in the Bathurst Corridor. Back at the Club, you can take in some local eats and then head out into the night to see gut-busting comedy from some of the country’s best comedians and improvisers.
After a day like that, you’ll sleep like a baby with sweet dreams of Shakespearean puppets, broken down buses and Toronto superheroes. You’ll wake up the next morning refreshed with an inexplicable craving to take in some more Fringe. With the Festival only lasting two weeks, you won’t want to miss one rootin’ tootin’ minute!
