Toronto: Fire and Air Productions proudly presents Piecing Together Pauline by Chris Coculuzzi and Roxanne Deans as part of the 2012 Toronto Fringe Festival (90 minute play). Directed by Chris Coculuzzi, the play opens Thursday, July 5, 2012 at 8:15 p.m. in the Tarragon Main Space, 30 Bridgman Avenue.
Piecing Together Pauline is a new herstorical drama about 19th century opera singer Pauline Garcia Viardot (1821-1910): a charismatic personality and performer and arguably the foundation for the modern artist and modern career woman. Author and feminist George Sand saw in her the ideal artist: the concept of a priestess with a divine mission to be a conduit for Truth and Beauty. Novelist Ivan Turgenev saw in her his muse, and spent his life being inspired by her and travelling with her and her husband throughout Europe. With Turgenev’s help, Pauline became a one-woman publicity machine for Russian literature and music, paving the way for such influential artists as Chekhov and Tchaikovsky. Featuring Genie Award and Actra Award nominee Elva Mai Hoover and Kristen Zaza, sharing the title role, Piecing Together Pauline reveals the impact of this extraordinary woman, and rescuing her legacy as a historical footnote.
Chris Coculuzzi and Roxanne Deans’ first writing collaboration was the critically acclaimed abridged version of Cyrano de Bergerac as part of the 2004 Toronto Fringe Festival. Chris was also the producer and co-writer of the Shakespeare’s Sports Canon series of plays (2001-2005) and Roxanne successfully produced and performedin the critically acclaimed Lear’s Daughters (2000) and Cloud Tectonics (2002).
Piecing Together Pauline features performances by Bil Antoniou, Tara Baxendale, Rob Candy, Stephen Flett, Damien Gulde, Chris Irving, Alex Karolyi, Scott McCulloch, Shannon Shura, Brenda Somers, Steve Switzman and Blake Thorne playing notable artists of the day including George Sand, Frederic Chopin, Charles Gounod, Hector Berlioz, Ivan Turgenev, Maria Malibran and Ary Scheffer.
The play is Stage Managed by Megan Courneyea and Jennifer Courneyea with Lighting Design by Courtney Pyke.
