Toronto: Vampire Frog Productions is presenting “Empire of the Magic Beanstalks” at this year’s Fringe Festival in Toronto at the Palmerston Library Theatre.
It’s all about the money in this twisted-fairytale continuation of Jack and the Magic Beanstalk. The Golden Goose is dead and Jack and his conniving mother Agnes come up with a plan to keep the riches flowing. They’re going to sell the magic beans to the highest bidder!
Princes Riagan and Amir, from neighbouring kingdoms arrive at the castle both ready to do business for the beans. Ships built from their timbers are virtually unsinkable and the mighty stalks can grow higher than the clouds overnight. Whoever controls the beans controls the world!
The beanstalk industry however is having devastating effects on the planet. Temperatures are climbing higher and the run-off from the processing centres is being dumped into the ocean. Fish are dying and the people of the sea, the merfolk, are succumbing to the fatal “red tide”, a disease not even the fish doctors can cure.
When mermaid princess Thalassa catches the “red tide” her sister Kaia makes a deal with the Sea Witch to get legs. She makes her way to dry land where she has three days to track down a magic bean to save her sister’s life and a handsome prince to save her own.
Warning: This play features realistic sword-fighting and may not be suitable for children under the age of eight
