Toronto: Are you looking for French connections in Toronto? Each year the Toronto Fringe Festival features numerous French-speaking artists. With 38 shows featuring francophone artists, this summer’s festival is no different. Three of our powerhouse companies hail from fellow Fringe town Montréal.
Musical Pawns follows a family of musicians hiding in occupied France, as they try to save their great-grandfather’s music from Bolshevik and German persecution. Based on a true story, this production features the music of forgotten master David Nowakowsky.
Montréal’s The House of Style presents The No Bull$#!% History of Canada. This production is a look at some of the obscure, whimsical and downright funny elements of Canadian history. The best part ⎯ it’s presented by a guy whose cousin was our shortest-termed and most ineffectual Prime Minister.
Winner of the Favourite Show Award at New York’s Frigid Festival, Little Lady is a classic piece of physical theatre. Sandrine Lafond combines her talent in dance, clowning and contortion to create a piece that is very comical and a little dark.
After last year’s successful run at the Montreal Fringe Festival, So We Thought We Could Act is back with new twists and turns. Join Dolores and Beatrice, two best friends who sell their souls to the Devil in exchange for Broadway fame. Real life best friends, Rena Hundert and Helen Prandekas, hail from Montreal where they co-wrote and produced the show.
All the way from Australia, The Ballad of Herbie Cox is a dance performance featuring husband and wife duo Victoria Chiu and Roland Cox. A mixture of dance, music and story-telling this new work unravels dark family secrets.
At the Fringe, theatre is our raison d’être. So, from July 4-15 come out and see the play du jour, and we’ll show you how the French do Fringe.
