Toronto (SummerWorks): Halifax’s 2b theatre company returns to the SummerWorks Festival with When it Rains, a new play written and directed by Anthony Black, and a special work-in-progress showing of The God That Comes, an original one-man-band cabaret-rock-&-roll hybrid created by Juno-winner Hawksley Workman and director Christian Barry.
When it Rains, which premiered in Halifax in April 2011, will be featured in the SummerWorks National Series. The show is a play in the form of a live action existential graphic novel. When two couples are beset with misfortune, communication fractures, relationships crumble, and behaviour becomes absurd. The production uses a single computer projector as the only lighting source. Framed against a wall, the actors interact with projected environments. When it Rains sold out its Halifax premiere and, with 8 Theatre Nova Scotia Merritt Award nominations, was the most nominated show of the year.
When it Rains will be performed at The Factory Theatre Mainspace, 125 Bathurst Street (at Adelaide Street) on Thursday August 9th @ 7:30 pm, Sunday August 12th @ noon, Monday August 13th @ 7:30 pm, Thursday August 16th @ 5 pm, Friday August 17th @ 2:30 pm, and Sunday August 19th @ 5 pm. Tickets are on sale now via Ticketwise.
The God That Comes is set to headline the SummerWorks music series. 2b’s artistic co-director Christian Barry teams up with Hawksley Workman to tell the story of Bacchus, the Greco-Roman god of wine, in this concept album for the stage. The work-in-progress collaboration fuses the chaotic revelry of a rock concert with the captivating intimacy of theatrical storytelling. The show will be performed one-night only on August 11th at 9:30 pm at the Theatre Centre. Tickets are on sale here.
2b previously brought Invisible Atom to SummerWorks in 2006. Other visits to Toronto have included Homage at the Luminato Festival and Revisited at Harbourfront’s New World Stage Festival and The Theatre Centre’s Free Fall Festival.
Halifax’s 2b theatre company is the most active exporter of contemporary theatre in Atlantic Canada. 2b has toured productions across Canada and to Australia, New Zealand, Scotland, Germany, Ireland, New York and Nashville. At home and abroad 2b has earned a reputation for work that is innovative, intelligent and moving.
