Hamilton: Second runner-up in the Hamilton Fringe Playwriting contest, and fresh from its 3.5/4 star review at the London Fringe (The Beat Magazine,) Savory Entertainment presents Dairy-Free Love – a one-woman comedy directed by Susan Wilby, starring actress and playwright Victoria Murdoch – at the Citadel Studio Theatre. (July 20th-29th, 2012)
Dairy-Free Love dives into the sheltered life and unfulfilled marriage of pleasantly quirky “Dawn”, the hostess of nightly Internet cooking show “Dawn’s Delights.” Married to handsome but absent cruise ship captain Kalum, Dawn loves domestic life, and does her best to maintain the values (and appearance!) of a perfect 1950's housewife. But Dawn has a secret: tonight is the five-year anniversary of the last time she left the house, and her slowly simmering life is about to reach a boil!
This clever blend of comedy and drama takes the shape of a cooking demonstration, featuring Victoria as Dawn, preparing three dairy and gluten-free dishes live onstage (food provided by Goodness Me! on Upper Gage) while sharing laugh-out-loud stories and touching personal discoveries. The audience will laugh and cry as Dawn invites you into her home, her life, and her heart. Dairy-Free Love is an emotionally fulfilling treat that will leave you wanting seconds! Dairy-Free Love was written by actress and first- time playwright Victoria Murdoch, and was inspired by her experiences living with gluten/lactose intolerance.
“It started with the idea of living a substitution for “real” life. When I think of the term “dairy-free,” it refers to making something more palatable for someone who isn’t able to digest the real thing. The idea behind Dairy-Free Love is that Dawn is unable to cope with, or digest real life—she creates her own version, her own little bubble that allows her to exist. Dawn has made substitutions for life and love that allow her to get by, but she’s had enough of the trap she’s created for herself; she is finally looking for a change, and that’s where the play begins.” (Excerpt from original Theatromania.ca interview.)
