Toronto: WITH SOMEBODY WHO LOVES ME: A GAY DANSICAL is a slick, fun (and a little dirty) dance show similar to a musical but without cheesy singing, and not your typical dance shows, you will not find any tutus or abstract motifs anywhere in this production. Instead, by employing clever transitions between dance numbers with staging and video, the show creates a cast of characters with clear story arcs that you not only get to know, but actually care about, that serve to enhance the emotional impact of each dance piece. Although the characters in this show are gay, all of their problems aren’t. This dansical tells the story of MANNY, a gay man in search of love, and DINA & LYNNE, a lesbian couple that must deal with the harsh reality of job loss and the strain it has on a relationship.
Yet even though MANNY’s entertaining failed attempts at love are as fun and flashy as a drag show, what really puts the gay in this dansical… well, besides the leatherman orgy number or the lesbian “make up sex” piece... is that MANNY’s struggles highlight a very serious phenomenon in gay culture - the “anti-effeminate” preoccupation.
Like many gay men in the community, MANNY steadfastly prefers ‘masculine men only’ as possible suitors. And throughout the ride, what MANNY commonly accepts as an acceptable preference almost costs MANNY a chance at real love and happiness… begging the question, can gay men be homophobic?
WITH SOMEBODY WHO LOVES ME: A GAY DANSICAL is a story told through a fusion of acting, movement, dance, video and music. We all move through life. We all communicate with our body… this dansical has a lot to say.
Featuring Toronto dancers Jen Mote (Rock of Ages), Patrizia Gianforcaro (Co-Founder, Lady Luck Productions), and new-comer, Brenner Smith and directed and choreographed by Frank Manzo (Manzo Entertainment); this play is guaranteed to wow Toronto audiences this summer with the first ever dansical, don’t miss out!
