At SummerWorks 2013:
Show and Tell Alexander Bell is a provocative spectacle inspired by Alexander Graham Bell’s attempt to invent an instrument that would enable his deaf wife to hear. While a modern-day operator leads the audience through this compelling drama of love and alienation, both parties become entangled in the perils and delights of communication. SummerWorks (www.summerworks.ca) is the largest juried festival in Canada featuring predominantly New Canadian plays and has grown to be renowned as one of Canada’s most exciting festival events. The hot new theatre company company Ars Mechanica (www.arsmechanicatheatre.com) is excited to bring this fascinating story to Toronto audiences after a successful international presentation at the CrisisArt theatre festival in Arezzo, Italy.

This production will take place in the same year as the discovery of Alexander Graham Bell’s voice was released to the public. Only this year, researchers were able to recover a recording of Bell’s voice from a cardboard wax disc. Released by the Smithsonian Institute, on it we can hear Bell declaim “I am Alexander Graham Bell- this is my voice.” We hope our production gives his story, and his history, another voice that accounts for the complexity of his life and the background to his invention.
