At SummerWorks 2013:
Phantasmagoria Collective is proud to announce the Canadian première of the internationally acclaimed hit play, Tender Napalm, by British playwright Philip Ridley. Under the direction of Dora nominee Cynthia Ashperger, with stellar performances from real life couple Amelia Sargisson and Kyle Purcell, this production takes a look at a couple’s effort to carry on after losing everything.
When tragedy strikes, how do we manage to stay a float? And what if the one person who can save you is also trying to pull you under? Watch as Man and Woman weave extraordinary tales in order to overcome their pain and carve out a brave new world in which they can love again. The latter-day Adam and Eve navigate a fantastical deluge of sea monsters, monkey soldiers, and flying saucers, while revealing glimpses of their fragile, real life selves.
Tender Napalm stars real life couple Sargisson and Purcell, who tackle the difficulties of playing an onstage couple with courage and passion. “It’s a gift to be working with someone you know so intimately and trust so implicitly, and hopefully, that’s allowed us to take bigger risks and delve deeper into the issues at the heart of this play,” says Sargisson of working with Purcell. “I was really excited about the opportunity to work with Amelia,” adds Purcell “the play is a real roller-coaster for the characters and it has definitely pushed me as an actor; to get to share that ride with my real life partner is a dream come true.”
This explosive two-hander, with its violent lyricism and pulsating sexuality, has seared itself into the minds of audiences the world over. Tender Napalm premièred in 2011 in London, England at Southwark Playhouse. It was nominated for a London Award for Art and Performance in the category of Best Play. It subsequently embarked on a smash-hit UK tour and has since been produced to great critical and popular acclaim around the world, from Ireland to Australia to Off-Broadway. Now, for the first time, Tender Napalm will be performed in Canada at the prestigious SummerWorks Festival.
Directed by Cynthia Ashperger and Assistant Director, Brittney Francis, the Phantasmagoria Collective production is stage managed by Sonia Vaillant and features lights by Simon Rossiter, original music and sounds by David Mesiha, set and costumes by Mariuxi Zambrano and Dustin Valen, and graphic designs by Chloe Purcell.
