Toronto (July 7, 2015) – Beginning July 7th, 2015, Erin Brubacher & Christine Brubaker will begin a 700km route, on foot, from Brubaker Valley Road in Lancaster, Pennsylvania to The historic John E Brubacher House in Waterloo, Ontario. These “7th cousins” will trace and re-chart, by foot, the immigration route that their ancestors once travelled through Pennsylvania, upstate New York, crossing at the Niagara River and into Southern Ontario. This unpacking and constructing of an auto-mythography will take place from July 7th- August 6th.
7th Cousins is an investigation of how the Brubach/kers got here, through time, travel, fleeing, migration and belief, to a moment of collaboration because of nothing more or less than a shared name. The two collaborators will be documenting the journey through scores for writing, photographing, and recording, to mine the material of their historic and present experiences, while generating new material from their imaginations.
Says Erin Brubacher of the journey: “Our piece is inherently about taking time, and interrupting the everyday pace that has become our habit. Recently, a stranger asked if we were walking to learn how to work and be together: This is certainly part of it.”
On Sunday, July 19th and Sunday, July 26th, the Brubach/kers have invited others to walk ‘with’ them, wherever they are in the world, beginning at 9am for as long as they choose for up to six hours. The artists suggest people do so in pairs, and invite participants to ‘check-in’ with them at the start and conclusion of their journeys.
From August 8th-11th, at the conclusion of their walk, 7th Cousins offer The Unpacking as a part of the Live Art Series for the SummerWorks Performance Festival. They invite audience members to join them in the early days of the ‘unpacking’ process: for a meal, a drink, a conversation over the lunch hour.
For more information and to participate in the shared walk, the collaborators have created a Facebook event: https://www.facebook.com/events/891022134285142/.
They will also be posting weekly updates along their journey on the 7th Cousins Facebook Page here: https://www.facebook.com/7thcousins/info?tab=page_info.
