Growing up the son of a minister is never easy, especially when you turn out to be gay. Adam Bailey tackles this aspect of his youth in the follow up to his 2014 Best of Fringe win in Toronto. Throughout the evening Adam shares several true and frank stories about the deeply internal conflicts that exist between sexuality and religious faith. The show promises not to pull punches or be sentimental, instead Adam uses a postmodern whimsy to take us from bible studies in banquet halls to bathhouse dates to his dalliances with pharmaceuticals in a performance that “flies by like a church service on speed” (CBC News Manitoba).
“Feels like a high-speed rip through suburbia, turning from hilarious to heartfelt to hopeful at breakneck speeds… This production was inventive and honest” The Vue, Edmonton.
The show has been developed with the assistance of Factory Theatre, where senior artists Nina Lee Aquino and Matt McGeachy have been able to help grow the piece with Mr. Bailey, which is directed by the accomplished Matt White. Adam Bailey’s previous play The Assassination of Robert Ford: Dirty Little Coward won Best of Fringe in 2014, and he directed last year’s Patron’s Pick Winner, Skunkweed, for Triple ByPass Productions. He is also a regular performer in Toronto’s Cabaret Scene and a Co-Artistic Director of theToronto Festival of Clowns. His time spent behind the scenes and on the stage pay dividends in Mr. Bailey’s Solo debut.
“The performance by this puckish urchin of a guy is agreeably user-friendly” Liz Nicholls, Edmonton Journal.
