Welcome to the world of Nigel Barrett, where every moment carries the feeling of just waking up for the very first time. Surrounded by his family, we embark on a tale that begs the question, ‘Who are we without our memories?’ Waking is a new play from up-and-coming Canadian playwright Joel Pettigrew, playing at the Al Green Theatre as part of the 2016 Toronto Fringe Festival from June 30 – July 9. Tickets go on sale on Thursday June 9th at www.fringetoronto.com or by calling 416–966–1062.
Waking is based on the true case of a man who suffers a severe brain trauma, which leaves him with a working memory only a few seconds long and renders him virtually incapable of forming new memories. What would it be like to lose this crucial part of your identity? How could you recognize your loved ones? Waking explores these questions and how it would affect those around you.
Writer and Director Joel Pettigrew has delved deeply into the human condition to show us just how frail we are. ‘Ten years of research went into creating this piece so that I could get it right, now I want to share it with everybody’. Waking achieves a perfect balance between the true life story it is based on, and striking a chord in every audience member. The themes in the play are a part of everyone’s lives.
Chameleon Productions was founded by producer Andrea Cabeza to bring new Canadian works to the forefront.
