The ever-unpredictable Sara Porter is back onstage performing her acclaimed work, Sara does a Solo, as part of SummerWorks Performance Festival, August 4, 7, 8 and 14, 2016 at the ScotiaBank Theatre, Pia Bouman Studio, 6 Noble Street, Toronto.
After decades as a dancer and (dance) writer, Sara Porter stands at a collision of the two in her multi-disciplinary work Sara does a Solo. A chance encounter with Canadian icon Mary Margaret O’Hara prompted Sara back on stage after a 10-year hiatus. Described as “Outrageously funny and brutally honest” (Scott Charles, Writer’s Block, San Francisco) and “One of the best pieces of theatre I’ve ever seen” (Rick Roberts, award-winning actor, Toronto), Sara does a Solo is part memoir, part stand-up comedy, and part dance performance melding storytelling, dance, poetry, projection, costume, singing, and strong visual design into a bold and beautiful account of mid-life. Porter presents a fearless account of what we all face – an aging body and a reflective mind – and creates a world of intimacy and pathos, hilarity and beauty through physical stories she tells about life as an artist and parent. Unlike anything else.
“I’ve finally figured out what I am: a blend of fact & fiction, a moving, howling, contemporary -stand-up-dance-comedian with no secrets. I’ve also come to realize that I am as good a candidate as any for False Memory Syndrome.”
New York, directors and audiences are raving!
“Refreshingly candid [with] dance that is urgent, emotionally mesmerizing and deliciously fun!” ~ Niegel Smith, Director, The Flea Theatre, NYC
“Porter is smart, funny, and poignant… a tour de force!” ~ Karen Bernard, Director, Performance Mix Fest, NYC
“Exceptionally deft… aesthetic pleasure from beginning to end.” ~ Douglas Dunn, Choreographer, NYC
Celebrated for her “daring imagination” (Toronto Star) and being "wickedly funny" (Dance Int’l), Porter is a multi-faceted artist, choreographer, performer and writer. Creator of over 25 works since 1990, she has performed in Toronto, Montreal, Halifax, Ottawa, Madrid, Edinburgh, Glasgow, San Francisco and NYC. Author of Peter in Process: Peter Boneham’s 60 years in dance (DCD, 2010), she is published in print in Canada and UK. Associate Artist with pounds per square inch performance, and Member at Intergalactic Arts Collective, Porter worked in Montreal and Edinburgh before settling in Toronto in 1998.
