The Watah Theatre is pleased to announce d’bi.young anitafrika’s third instalment in her new triptych – The Orisha Trilogy. Following rave reviews, three Dora Nominations and one Dora Award for Esu Crossing The Middle Passage and She Mami Wata & The Pussy WitchHunt, Bleeders will premiere during The Summerworks Festival on The Theatre Centre main stage from August 4th to 14th, 2016.
An Afro-futurist dub-opera set in Ontario, Bleeders is the culminating play in anitafrika's second trilogy of plays. The story takes place way into the future - the Pickering Nuclear Plant has exploded, and a group of Black womxn form a small council. How, in the midst of government oppression, repression of the gender revolution, and ecological degradation do we still find hope?
Anitafrika is the winner of three Dora awards for Blood.claat and She, Mami Wata & the Pussy WitchHunt. Other awards include: KM Hunter Theatre, Mayor’s Arts, Vital People, Canadian Poet of Honor, Toronto Leadership Lab Fellow and YWCA Woman of Distinction in the Arts. She is an internationally celebrated African-Jamaican dubpoet, playwright-monodramatist, arts-educator, and Artistic Director of The Watah Theatre, whose trans-disciplinary work (dubpoetry, theatre, music, dance, writing, storytelling) explores themes of identity, gender, sexuality, divinity, the erotic, race, class and the human experience. She is the creator of the human development framework – The Sorplusi Method – which has been employed by The Stephen Lewis Foundation, The Banff Centre, U of T, MaRS, Women’s College Hospital and other institutions globally.
Bleeders features Aquilla Rootz (The Enemy Within, Risk Life), Sashoya Shoya Oya (Know to Police, Lele), Raven Dauda (Addicted, Up the Garden Path), Najla Nubyanluv (I Cannot Loose My Mind), Olunike Adeliyi (Flashpoint, The Marriage of Anansewa), Aisha Bentham (Mammy Queen, We Walk Among You), Nickeshia Garrick (Obeah Opera, Nutcracker), Khadijah Roberts-Abdullah (We are Proud To Present, The Last Days of Judas Iscariot) and Ravyn Wngs (Ballet Creole, She Mami Wata & The Pussy WitchHunt). This all-star cast is lead by Director d’bi.young anitafrika and Musical Director Waleed Abdulhamid, who along with Dora Nominated Composer tuku, will create a riveting score to accompany anitafrika’s provocative words. With lightning design by Sharmylae Taffe-Fletcher and set & costume’s by Rachel Forbes, Bleeders is a theatrical experience that no one should miss.
