From the distorted minds that brought audiences The Art of Building a Bunker, Bleed, and Wonderland, comes Daughter, a new one-man show that examines the beauty and horror of men.
In the liminal space between truth and fiction, between autobiography and fantasy, writer/performer Adam Lazarus' twists the knife in our dirty little secrets. Daughter is a darkly satirical piece about a father, raised in patriarchy, confronting his new identity as a patriarch.
Are we defined by our past?
Where do we draw the line?
Can we forgive, despite an inability to forget?
Directed by Ann-Marie Kerr (2012 Gina Wilkinson Prize) and performed by master clown Adam Lazarus (2010 SummerWorks Spotlight Award), Daughter explores the true-bouffon style: stories that expose and laugh at the hypocrisies and difficulties of the human experience.
This project is a workshop production playing as part of SummerWorks Performance Festival. It has been made possible through the generous support of the Toronto Arts Council.
About QuipTake
The goal of a QuipTake production is to provoke and entertain, to showcase the virtuosity of performance and text, and to artistically collide with current ideas and problems bubbling in the zeitgeist. We also attempt to expose and explore a state of confusion.
QuipTake was formed by Adam Lazarus in 2004 as a platform for his own work and as a collective of guest collaborators dedicated to education, mentorship, working with diverse artists, and focusing on social justice. Notable QuipTake productions include annual Bouffon Cabarets, Misha Sulman’s Israeli/Palestinian satire Apricots; Le Bibliotheques Du Spectacles directed by Alan Dilworth as part of Luminato; Lazarus’ 2010 SummerWorks hit Wonderland (Spotlight Award for Outstanding Performance); Melissa D’Agostino’s Lupe Trilogy; the gruesome death-opera Bleed; and The Art of Building a Bunker by Lazarus and Guillermo Verdecchia.
