Award winning producer (La Grande Jatte – winner of My Entertainment World’s Outstanding Improv or Sketch) and Toronto theatre newcomer Samantha Chaulk explores Newfoundland’s confederation to Canada (1949 – 68 years ago) while telling women’s stories and offering a look at the lost art of “charming”, a Newfoundland specific folk-healing practice.
Based on Samantha’s family history, the play centres around Bride, a young woman who returns to her childhood home of Heart’s Desire after a year of studying nursing in St. John’s to find she must stay with her Uncle, the town charmer. When he enlists her to read him the letters he receives from people all over the world, this magically real coming of age story mixes humour and heartache to make a salve for modern anxiety.
Dear Uncle Wish is directed by Adam Bailey. He has directed several Fringe hits: The Assassination of Robert Ford: Dirty Little Coward (Best of Fringe in 2014 and 4 Stars from The Torontoist), Skunkweed (Winner: Patrons' Pick 2015, Triple ByPass Productions, NNNN review from Now Magazine). Other team members include Stage Manager/LX designer John C J Murphy (Storefront’s Tough Jews, 6 Dora Nominations), Dramaturg Ryan Hughes (Edmonton's Sterling award for Outstanding Fringe New Work for Change Room) Jamie Johnson (The Last
Days Of Judas Iscariot at Unit 102 - Winner of the My Entertainment World Outsanding Production Small Theatre Acted in Pirates Don't Babysit - Winner Best of KidsFringe), Evan Walsh (Theatre Hera’s Grapefruit), Jana Gillis (NIFCO/Telefilm PictureStart short film “Malignant”) and Erin Roche (Blues Bawls, Jaybird Productions).
Funny, moving, and nostalgic, Dear Uncle Wish offers a window into a forgotten practice and spiritual culture that challenges our contemporary cultural preoccupations. This calming and uplifting show returns to a moment in time when everything changed for Newfoundland. The present sits own for tea with the past and asks: When everything is changing so quickly and there is no going back, where do I look if I wish to find something that will never change?
