THE ATOMIC TRADITION depicts the final hour of a relationship between Angie and Bella. When the domestic meets the metaphysical, these lovers face their insecurities and discover the dark, sub-atomic forces lurking within. Mounting tension culminates in a blast wave of violence and cosmic catastrophe that is both tender and terrifying.
Humankind’s inherent capacity for violence and the precariousness of civilization are the major themes of THE ATOMIC TRADITION. The play also explores scientific notions by drawing a poetic parallel between human behaviour and cosmic processes.
In addition to being one of Toronto's top acting coaches, director Sophie Ann Rooney is an award-winning filmmaker. Her short film ‘Fallen Fighter’ was picked up by Oscar Contender Chicago International Children’s Film Festival and won numerous awards including the Kodak award in Paris. Playwright Istvan Dugalin is a senior writer for Mooney On Theatre. In 2016, he directed Our Soul’s production of ‘The Ties That Bind’ for the Hamilton Fringe Festival and at Theatre Passe Muraille as a special presentation for World Suicide Prevention Day 2016.
While enduring and universal, themes explored in THE ATOMIC TRADITION are particularly relevant today. As people around the world fear the ominous promise of a “Trump America,” this story about how quickly a relationship can fall apart is a resonating allegory for a fragile and volatile civilization.
