Ontario, the great lakes are bone dry, the boreal forest has vanished under extreme arid heat. Bandits roam the desolate landscape searching ruined towns for the vanished element now sacred on the lips of women: water.
Written by Natalie Frijia DIVINE, is the very first original work developed through Storefront’s playwriting unit to receive a full production. Directed by Storefront’s Artistic Managing Director Claire Burns (Human Furniture- ROTC/Triangle Pi), DIVINE meshes art with activism while exploring a dystopian future that feels all too familiar alongside headlines calling the Nestlé Corporation controversy a fresh water wake up call. The Storefront has partnered with the WWF as well as the Wellington Water Watchers in order to bring this powerful story to audiences at a critical juncture in the use of our global natural resources.
Featuring an all female cast, DIVINE follows the story of a pair of desperate bandits played by Rehaset (diaspora Dub - b current) and Sarah Naomi Campbell (We Three - Cue6 Productions) as they search for a mysterious water diviner by the name of Penn, Amanda Cordner (body so fluorescent - Rhubarb Festival). The bandits aren't the only ones hunting Penn down, a fanatic preacher Aviva Armour-Ostroff (Pomona - ARC) a child by the name of Seven Haley Garnett and a tough as nails bartender, Christina Bryson (Jackie Boy - Canadian Film Fest) also seek the help of this elemental messiah, but if there is nothing left for Penn to divine an angry mob can only quench its thirst on blood.
Featuring an incredible team of designers, DIVINE adopts the genre of the western and puts a uniquely female Atwoodian stamp on the predominately male dominated style. Set by Christine Urquhart, (The Numbers Game - Storefront Theatre) costumes by Sage Paul (Munschtime - YPT), sound design by Suzie Balogh (Wait Until Dark - Storefront Theatre), and lighting by Imogen Wilson (Watch Out Wildkat and Swordplay - Sex T-Rex).
By and large, Canadians still subscribe to the dangerous myth of our inexhaustible water wealth, DIVINE is a prophetic cautionary tale told through magical realism and TRUE GRIT, seeking to uproot this dangerous illusion.
