The National Arts Centre French Theatre is pleased to welcome, in a Canadian première, the French version of The (Post) Mistress by the Cree artist Tomson Highway, directed by Geneviève Pineault. While Marie-Louise, a post mistress in northern Ontario, describes in song the secrets of the people of her village, an entire community is revealed and an imaginary world unfolds.
The magnetic presence of Patricia Cano will be accompanied on stage by Tomson Highway on piano and saxophonist Vince Rimbach. This coproduction reinforces the ties that exist between the French Theatre and the Théâtre du Nouvel-Ontario in Sudbury, where Brigitte Haentjens was artistic director in the 1980s. By combining forces to bring to life this simple story, the two theatre companies enable the iconic writer from the “Four Corners” to present a work in a language that, in the author’s opinion, comes closest to what is expressed in the Cree language.

Acting as moderators at this bilingual get-together and discussion will be two students from the theatre department at the University of Ottawa: Lindsay Lachance, who has just completed her Master’s thesis on contemporary Native theatre, and Véronique Hébert, whose research focuses on shamanism and the work of Jovette Marchessault.
Thursday, October 18 from 2:30 to 4 p.m. in the Academic Hall Theatre at the University of Ottawa (133 Séraphin Marion St.).
