The award-winning Toronto Irish Players opens their 38th season with the Irish classic Translations by Brian Friel.
Set in a hedge school in the fictional town of Baile Beag in 1833 the locals struggle to maintain their cultural identity in the face of a campaign by the colonising authority to map the county and transform local place names into anglicized versions. The inability of Irish and British characters to communicate is initially comic but leads inevitably to confusion and intolerance. The clash between classical and utilitarian forms of education prefigures the tragedy that is to come with an escalation of oppression and resistance, and the looming Great Famine which will ultimately combine to obliterate the traditional way of life.
Translations directed by Jim Ivers opens at the Alumnae Theatre, 70 Berkeley Street, Toronto on Thursday, October 18th for a 3 week run (Thurs – Sat @ 8pm and Sun at 2 pm). For bookings call 416-440-2888 or book online at www.torontoirishplayers.com.
