Outdoor winter theatre is back in Toronto, and here to stay. Theatre Columbus is excited to announce a new partnership with Evergreen Brick Works, which will bring outdoor theatre to Toronto audiences for years to come. Christening the partnership is a remount of last year’s award-winning production of The Story by Martha Ross.
Last year, The Story was a hit. Nominated for six Dora Awards, and winning the award for Outstanding Direction by Jennifer Brewin, The Story was named a must see event by both audiences and critics, who called it “boisterous,” “comical,” “stunning” and “magical.”
Staged throughout the bewitching grounds of Evergreen Brick Works, The Story pairs a prestigious theatre company with a remarkable space. Theatre Columbus’ production sets an ancient story in a modern context. After throwing on coats, hats, mittens and boots, the audience can fill up on hot chocolate and follow familiar characters on a one-hour walk-about show. Adding to the magic of the evening, each performance features one of eight rotating choirs that serenades the audience throughout the performance.
Joined by newcomers Neema Bickersteth and Jeff Yung, actors Sanjay Talwar, Rylan Wilkie and Haley McGee return to launch Toronto’s newest theatre tradition.
Last year 1500 people paraded through snow, sleet and star-filled nights to experience something uniquely Canadian. “I love outdoor theatre because we’re all in on it,” says McGee, who returns as “Mary” and is writing next year’s outdoor winter show. “The actors, the audience, the crew – all braving the elements together. The performance happens at their mercy and shapes the show. It’s invigorating and thrilling doing outdoor theatre in the winter.”
