Toronto (October, 2012) – Theatre Gargantua is thrilled to announce their latest work in development: The Sacrifice Zone – a dynamic investigation into the harrowing pursuit of justice in a manufactured resource industry town. This international collaboration with celebrated Australian playwright Suzie Miller and her company The Uncertainty Principle represents the first public performances of Gargantua’s 10th Cycle of Work.
Artistic Director Jacquie Thomas and playwright Suzie Miller first met in Quebec City during rehearsals for Robert Lepage’s new show, Playing Cards with his company Ex Machina, and discovered a shared affinity for similar philosophies and aesthetics. Once Thomas revealed that Theatre Gargantua’s next development cycle was exploring the idea of justice, Miller’s work as a human rights lawyer seemed a perfect fit, and another Gargantua collaboration was born.
The creation process began by exploring the human instinct for fairness, and our unquenchable need for justice. In our chaotic, competitive universe, justice is a paradigm that defies objective definition. Instead it is shaped by our lived experiences, our values, and the ways we choose to see the world around us. Gradually the question emerged: how much would you sacrifice to make things right?
This new cycle has already undergone three development phases this year, which will culminate in two public performances on November 23rd and 24th, before the work goes back into its next phase of development. The final installment of the work will premiere in the fall 2013.
At the helm of The Sacrifice Zone is Company Founder and Artistic Director Jacquie Thomas, whose previous artistic contributions to the company have earned her 10 Dora Award nominations. Award-winning playwright Suzie Miller has been steadily forging a career at home in Australia as well as the US & UK, with acclaimed productions in Sydney, London, Belfast and New York.
The team is joined by some of Toronto’s finest designers, including John Gzowski as Sound Designer, Theatre Gargantua’s Associate Artistic Director Michael Spence as Set Designer, Laird Macdonald as Projection & Lighting Designer, and Sheree Tams as Costume Designer. Playwright Bruce Barton rounds out the team as Dramaturg.
Theatre Gargantua is also pleased to welcome back some of their previous core collaborators and new artists alike. The Sacrifice Zone features performances by Michael Spence, Joel Benson, Pam Patel, Madeleine Donahue and Ciara Adams.
