The taxi industry is on the verge of great change; working conditions are not improving and there is much unrest. This multi-media play goes on a journey with Toronto’s taxi drivers and exposes the struggles they face. Creators and performers Ruth Madoc-Jones, Marjorie Chan, and Alex Williams present the human face of this often overlooked industry.
The collective has been researching and developing this project for over two years, conducting hundreds of interviews, attending meetings and rallies, and filming taxi rides. They have sifted the plethora of material into one ninety-minute docudrama, Fare Game: Life In Toronto’s Taxis. Artistic Director Andy McKim is thrilled that TPM developed this play as part of the Theatre Beyond Walls season. “Fare Game is a passionate, articulate and entertaining show that will introduce the audience to a secret world- a world that we all travel in without noticing. Ruth, Marjorie and Alex are remarkably talented guides who have spun a play that looks beyond the taxi culture. It asks us to think about who came first, who came last and whether we are all treated equally in this city of immigrants.”
Fare Game: Life in Toronto’s Taxis marks the 7th initiative of TPM’s Theatre Beyond Walls Season. The fall at TPM has already seen a hugely successful Street Fest; the inspiring and intimate dance piece Queen West Project; a touring wonderland- The ToyBox -that had its first two stops in our Mainspace and at City Hall where even the Councilors turned out; the out-of-the-box radio drama The Four Corners recorded a free live performance at Bathurst and Queen on September 29; the launch of our Bring The Buzz Festival and the Toronto love story This Must Be The Place: The CN Tower Show which must close on October 27.
Bring the Buzz is our audience dramaturgy initiative for the 2012 fall season. Typically TPM hosts 2-3 Buzz Festivals a year where we invite artists to showcase fifteen minutes to an hour of a piece in development and invite audiences to give feed back and discuss what they have seen. To further this ideal, TPM has invited 5 companies to be in residence and bring the Buzz! The project provides meaningful support to the artistic community by providing theatre space to emerging and independent artists to develop their art through the engagement of TPM’s core audience.
The next companies in residence are MachineFair Productions with What You Want: Toronto running October 18-November 3 in the backspace; Suburban Beast with Concord Floral running Ocotber 31- November 10 in the TPM mainspace; and the final company Theatre Hetaere with a Theatre Hetaere Theatrical Event running November 5-25 in the backspace.
