art & lies productions invite you to the opening production of their thrilling second season, In Adagio, a new play creation by Jessica Salgueiro. Their first production of Death (A Play) by Woody Allen, and of No Exit, by Jean-‐Paul Sartre, proved to be resounding successes, and were met with sold out houses and incredible reviews. art & lies productions are being named as one of the new Canadian theatre companies to watch in 2012.
In Adagio, is set in the heat of the Algerian War, during which Paris is undergoing civil unrest and terrorism as the Algerian Independence supporters rage for their cause. The events immediately precede the 1961 Paris Massacre, singers are preparing for their sold-‐out concert at the Paris Opera. The expected attendance of the Chief of the Paris -‐threat is made and the two performers choose to endure the hiatus, Ria Krauss, the previously reigning queen of the classical Opera is strident in her commitment to her comeback performance. Carminda Fernandes, the sensational Portuguese Fado singer, masks her terror as she follows the between the performers. With two completely different approaches to their life and art, but a mutual affection for a particular Italian aristocrat the inside walls of the theatre become a danger zone. The singers battle for precedence with their strength of will but more magnificently with the force of their music.
In Adagio samples music from classical composers such as Bellini and Puccini. The production showcases the passionate viscera, which makes Opera a timeless authority on love and loss. At once, it also reveals the haunting, gut-‐wrenching ballads of the Portuguese Fado, along with legendary songs performed countless times by Fado icon Amalía Rodrigues. The audience is ushered into the spellbinding grip of this fiercely original and tragically carnal style of music. Paying homage to the second-‐empire, as well as the lush aesthetic of Victorian décor, the audience can also anticipate glimpses of the elegance of the Paris Opera to be transported onto the Sterling Studio Theatre stage.
art & lies productions commits itself to heightened and stylized approaches to theatre creation. Inspired by early twentieth century artistic experimentation, including the Theatre of the Absurd and its canon of artists and scripts, art & lies productions thrives on the spectacle, precision and messaging inherent to those traditions. The inspiration delves into the themes and philosophies of fear, love, meaning of life, value of the individual versus the group, and seeks out the fallibility in the human condition. The discoveries are stylized through heightened characters and stage design, in order to recognize a greater sense of community and humanity within the stories we explore on stage. The result is relevant, resonant and dynamic theatre productions, marked by their sharp physical turns, and profound emotional values. art & lies productions celebrates that which makes us thrive and falter, and thus, that which reveals the human condition, in the face of its implicit and social challenges and inspirations.
